Presentation: Caution: The Health You Save May be Your Own: Lifestyle and Exercise (determining your risk factors)

Along with obesity, over 50% of the chronic diseases we experience are lifestyle-related; related to the decisions we make. A part of lifestyle decisions includes diet, exercise, and responsible health decision making.
Allied -health professions can help patients, families, and communities achieve positive health outcomes; reduce their risk factors; increase motivation for healthier decisions; and to promote healthy decision making.

At the end of this workshop the participants will be able to:

  • Assess your risk factors for disease
  • Assess your health and the health of others
  • Identify risk factors that place you at risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension
  • Understand the relationship between exercise, health, and health-related decision making

Presenter: Michelle Prowse, PhD candidate in the Department of Physical Therapy, School of Allied Health Professions, Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California, USA

Presentation: Celebrate Life: Exploring Spirituality and Wholeness

The effect of spiritual values, defined as values that give your life meaning; reason for living, are recognized as providing positive physiological benefits through reduction of physiologic markers for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stress; for example, forgiveness has proven to reduce the release of the neurotransmitters associated with high levels of stress and implicated in increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes; this release also has the effect of reducing the immune system thereby raising the susceptibility to illness and disease.

This workshop will discuss recent researching findings and present practical examples of application that can be taught to others.

Presenter: Bruce Nelson, Director, Chaplain’ Office, Glendale Adventist Medical Center, Glendale, California, USA.
